Backwoods Bastard (2015)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice, and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Scotch has mellowed, giving flavor complexity center stage. Comparing with an aged 2018, it's much smoother with a nice coco-cherry finish.

I can taste some of the quality shining through but this particular bottle didn’t age well (or maybe the entire year was muted, but that seems doubtful). Too bad. This is generally one of my favorite brews. Assumptions: 4.5. This bottle: 2.5. Split rating

Aged 6 years! Has a complex malt profile and a really strong bourbon backbone. Might be aged a little too long but still smooth and enjoyable 🍻

I think it’s held up. Reminds me more of an old ale now, but I am good with that. Still has strong bourbon character, and a little wood-y.

Ummm…I opened a’17 earlier this year that tasted like a paper bag. Dry bag. There must have been a brewing change between, because this is still going. Barrel heat still present, with a much drier English toffee finish. Holding the last two (save SSW)

Very nice brew, bourbon and spices, covers and cinnamon I reckon, but clearly, at 6-7 years has overreached its prime a little bit.
