Monk's Brew Ulickij

A lovely rendition of a style that can get away from brewers who try to tell too much without showing for it in clean fermentation. Smooth, almost creamy, dense with plum and jam notes, some restrained astringency for balance, and a complex finish.

Nelson Sauvignon Dry Hopped (2018) Ulickij

Never thought I’d see this on draught! A deeper colour than you’d imagine, with funk and a breadth of inviting barrel flavours front and centre. Bright, refreshing, and full of gooseberry, underripe plum, verdant hops, and musty pet fur (in a good way.)

SpontanAcai Ulickij

Some beers thrived after the great cellar freezes. This one did not. That being said, it’s pretty good for being pretty much pomegranate juice at 0 carbonation.

Black Bear Ulickij

So long as the Bear is Russia, get fucked. If, in those quiet nights, the bear is this decadent imperial stout, let us appreciate it as quietly as post-shelling dawns. This is delicious—deliriously so. Cocoa, fig, grape jelly, roast, rye, cinnamon sweet.

Beer Geek Fudgesicle BA Rye Whiskey Ulickij

Dead smooth. Straight stout up front, no frills (but no heat either) before mellowing effortlessly into creamy chocolate. Would have liked a bit more barrel love, but the light spice and boozy nose was enough to lift the flavours out of the Hershey wrap.

Rosé de Gambrinus (2020) Ulickij

Spontanlemon Ulickij

This is exactly what you’d expect. A touch of pith, but otherwise, punishing acidity. Funky, bright, tannic, just a face numbing barrage and I am entirely here for it.

Spontanframboos Ulickij

Sometimes you pluck a raspberry and you don’t know what you’ll get. Pucker bomb or granny’s jam? This beer leans closes to the jammy end, with fulsome fruitiness; a sense mouthfeel, and brambly finish.

Spontancassis Ulickij

Cassis brings with it some meaty, sweaty flavors I can’t fully get behind, especially against the high bar set by the Spontan-series. Drinks lighter than its percentage; as always.

Nelson Sauvignon / Sauvin Brut Passion Orange / Chardonnay Barrel Aged Ulickij

Brut-al night. This slaps, passionfruit always steals the show, and works well with the oranges for a hit of pithy citrus, all pulled together by the buttery warmth and brightness of the chard barrels.

Kriek 100% Lambic Bio (2019) Ulickij

Things are once again going to get very wacky for #deepfreeze2021 as I learn in year two of living in this character home that extreme cold pushes the cellar door out of its place, netting me a total loss of cellar beers. Thawing what I can for “fun.”

Spontantripleblueberry Ulickij

Another Drop C Brewing session means another day of shit going up the wall, back down, and in this case, frying the wires within it. A flavour wall of sound, blueberries in all their jam and unreserved tartness, carved by barrel and a dry, pithy funk.
