Sweyn Forkbeard - Sherry Barrel Release

Barleywine - American

Our “Danish Imperial Series” is an ever expanding series of imperial strength beers, each honoring a different individual from Denmark’s long imperial history. You hold in your hand a special variant of the fourth beer in our Danish Imperials Series: “King Sweyn Forkbeard”. Brewed with British malts and a generous dose of Citra, Cascade, and Green Bullet hops, this release of “Sweyn” then spent several months resting in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels, imparting additional characteristics of oak, rich molasses, figs, and caramel.

Nose is overripe apple and a little mold. Taste is sweet, mostly dried fruits, fig, date and sultanas. Warming and not too complex afterburn.

BL 3.65! The sherry character from the barrel is actually quite nice, but I suspect a lingering dryness also comes partly from the barrel, which maybe is underlined by the American style hop character.. In my opinion that doesn’t quite suit a barleywine..

Way to heavy on the sherry barrel, leaving little room for the base beer. Some dry wooden notes, dark dried fruits. I expected better.
