Utopias Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA

IPA - American

The Holy Grail for hopheads, 120 Minute IPA is continuously hopped with a copious amount of high-alpha American hops throughout the boil and whirlpool, aged in Sam Adams Utopias barrels for a full twelve months, and then abundantly dry-hopped.

A bit of an IPA bite at the end, but the Utopias flavor makes it taste like a very complex barley wine. I have three more that I'll be aging. Figured I'd have a special beer after finishing my deck refresh.

Damn bro! This is a DIPA but it's basically a sweet barleywine.

Plenty of booze to follow all of the barrel goodness. For this being 17% there is plenty of balance running through this beer.

A bit sweet, plenty of bourbon, loads of hops, caramel, rich, some vanilla.

Brilliance. Vibes of a heavyweight and dangerously smooth BA barleywine.

It’s hard to believe that they could improve on the original, but this one does. Boozy, raisins, oaky and a little Smokey. Perfect.

Surprisingly good. I didn’t think a barrel aged ipa sounded great but it is really good and smooth for %17

They made a classic even better! The utopias definitely mellows this out like aging one does. Also adds some great flavor!

Brown sugar, carmel, golden raisen. Bourban (oaky) on the palate towards mid palate. Hop structure comes through on the finish. It has been a while since I have had a 120, but the barrel balances it nicely. Will have to try them side by side soon.

This is so good. Hops, bourbon, raiains, and spices. Packs a punch at 17%.

Very hoppy, boozy, whiskey, boozy, brown sugar, boozy, barrel, dry. Bold and delicious. Sip and enjoy. Perfect for when you come home after a terrifying drive on Wallings Road through the South ‘burbs of Cleveland Ohio USA. 🍻👍

Might be a hot take…I think this version is smoother than the OG 120 but not sure I’m digging the barrel-aged flavor as much

Oh that’s dandy that is! Best of both world, all of what is the 120 plus a barrel aged oak and dark fruit hit on the nose and finish. Wowsa this is amazing

To me this seemed like a delicious barleywine than a IPA. Smooth while still packing a punch.

Booozy! Which also makes it a bit sweet, but that’s OK. It will be interesting to see if this improves as it airs a bit and warms.

Strangely, aging in a barrel actually takes some of the alcohol edge off and mellows it out.
