Beer Thousand

Lager - IPL (India Pale Lager)

10x10x10 = BEER Thousand. In early fall 2014, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will celebrate the spirit of indie rock greats Guided by Voices with the imperial lager BEER Thousand. Just as Dogfish Head has always brewed the beers we want to drink instead of bending toward trends and tradition, Guided by Voices has always made the music they want to listen to. To celebrate that independent spirit and the 20th anniversary of the band’s classic album Bee Thousand, Dogfish Head has brewed BEER Thousand. This imperial lager, chosen to echo the copious amounts of lager that fuelled GBV’s garage recordings, is brewed with 10 grains and 10 hop varieties, and clocks in at 10% ABV.

Previous check-in was from 2017, and it was after 3 years in my cellar/closet which puts this beer at 10 years old. Call this beer ten thousand. Carbonation is almost gone. Flavor is trending to a mead. Kept too long.

Drinking surprisingly well. Undercarbed at this point but there's a rich malty sweetness that has developed. Lots of sediment. Decant the first 8 oz. Most of the oxidation taste is in that leftover sludge.

I’ve had this 4-hour farewell concert DVD for 15 years and never watched it, and the band’s been reunited for 10+ years at this point. I’ve had this beer—my last bottle of Guided by Voices “Beer Thousand”—for 6 years. Tonight’s the night.

Aging has made this already outstanding beer even better. No hoppy bitterness at all, but lots of spice & Orange marmalade.
