Backwoods Bastard (2015)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice, and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

NICE! A really good bourbon barrel beer! Smooth, a little sweet, perfect boozyness, malty, w the scotch ale undertone… delicious

Yes, this is from the 2015 release. A 7 year old bottle. This beer has aged very well. Still with a strong malty taste and barrel aged flavor. It's one of my favorites.

Bottled on 9/16/2015. There is a little bit of sediment on the bottom of bottle but still refreshing.

I am working my way through an older supply. Years ago, this beer was hard to find or had restricted sales. I tended to keep a few in reserve each year. Now it's available year long. After 7 years, this beer has aged very well.

Pulled this out of the celar. More carbonation than I expected. Aroma is tobacco. Booze taste is muted, slight cherry and carmel flavors coming thru.

Nine years old and this has mellowed big time in every aspect. Liquid caramel with a touch of barrel.

I guess I have been aging this one for some time. It's starting to get that caramel oxidation flavor. It's still very good overall.

Excellent. Smooth, soft mouthfeel. Good bourbon barrel flavor. Gets a little booze in the throat for a warm finish.

Aged 6 years! Has a complex malt profile and a really strong bourbon backbone. Might be aged a little too long but still smooth and enjoyable 🍻

Ummm…I opened a’17 earlier this year that tasted like a paper bag. Dry bag. There must have been a brewing change between, because this is still going. Barrel heat still present, with a much drier English toffee finish. Holding the last two (save SSW)
