French Toast Bastard (Barrel Aged Series 2022)

Scottish Ale

Backwards Bastard gets the full fledged breakfast treatment! Our malty and rich bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale is introduced to the essence of smooth Maple, warm cinnamon, and notes of sweet vanilla for an incredibly decadent brunch inspired sipper. One taste and you'd swear you were digging into your Sunday morning french toast. Breakfast for dinner anyone? What is something off my bottle

French toast indeed. Very sweet cinnamon maple nose. If you like sugary sweet this would be your jam.

Yep, it tastes just like French toast. I feel like I should have a bacon chaser with this. Cheers!

If this were not a scotch ale I would have passed. But I was intrigued and happy I tried it. Maple syrup starts out and is quickly followed by cinnamon. As it warms up the bourbon flavoring enters and just makes it a damn fine ale.

The base is my favorite Founders beer ever, and the adjuncts all but dominate it, but that’s not to say it’s pretty decadent. A touch harsh being fresh as regular Backwoods is. But the unfermentables are pretty well balanced, could’ve been a mess.

Wow, lovely nose. Reminds me of that French toast cereal from the 90s. Flavor is a mix of vanilla bean and cinnamon sugar. Touch of dark roast coffee and burnt caramel. Way better than the prior version I had.

Cinnamon, maple, zero barrel. The OG version killed this.

Better than the brewery-only release a few years ago. Maple, cinnamon, and barrel deliciousness. Smells incredible.

This year its elevated to a 5/5. Unlike many BA maple beers that are an ambiguous “sweet” flavor, this one genuinely tastes like French toast. Accurate adjuncts, 11.1%, and $14.99 for 4 make this a solid value beer.

Sweet and savory. Cinnamon isn't overwhelming, which can be difficult to do. Vanilla and maple compliment each other quite nicely.
