Oude Geuze A L’Ancienne VAT 108bis Mono Blend P.
Boon may not be considered amongst the best lambic brewers but releases like this prove they can mix it with the big boys. It's everything you want in a geuze, dry and lemony, funky and sour, effervescent and delicate. Bloody great stuff.

This was my 'extra time' beer. It tasted like nectar. Better get some strong stuff in for Sunday!

HORAL's Oude Geuze Mega Blend (2021) P.
Light and dry, slight lemon notes, as bubbly as a fine champagne.

The Nelson Sauvin here gives a vibe reminiscent of a grape lambic, albeit sharper and funkier. Mikkeller always do a good hopped lambic, this is definitely continuing their fine record there.

Okay, I know that in their lower strength lambics Boon use sweetners and no, it's not as good as Cantillon or Drei Fonteinen. Still, it's got that unmistakable lambic funky tartness and cherries by the boatload. Hits the spot at a good price.

SpontanCherry Frederiksdal (2021) P.
Now this is a sour. Huge cherry from the off with an almost winey aspect, big funky sour hit. Excellent.

Geuze Mariage Parfait (2017) P.
Just in case anyone has forgotten, the Belgians make the best sours. There's not a sour in the world that can stand up to a lambic or a gueuze, and this has everything a sour fan wants; it's dry, light, funky, effervescent and, importantly, excellent.

A sour braggot with pink basil... definitely the madder side of Mad Scientist. It's a good kind of mad too, most enjoyable.

I'm not sure if it's been the glut of big hitter IPAs that I've drunk over the past few days but this lacked a bit of punch. It is very drinkable for the ABV, it's light and citrusy, but it just lacks a bit of pizzazz. Very good, just not as good as some.

With that fruit on the bill it sounds more like a sour, but you're soon reminded that this is a mead. Honey sweetness but not cloying, being a hyrdomel the alcohol isn't too dominant and the fruit gives tropical mango fading to a sharp tang. Splendid.

The grapefruit takes the edge off the honey sweetness in here; this beer is more than just fine, it's very good indeed.

It's a blueberry mead - and it's a good mead at that, neither flavour dominates the other. I'm glad it's only a 330ml as it's very sweet - as a mead should be - but for lovers of fruity honey wine like me, I recommend giving this a try.

Grape mead? Honey wine? I can see how this would divide opinion; it's got all the flavour characteristics of a dry white wine yet it's got that distinct flavour from the honey there too. Perhaps it's more wine than mead but I could drink lots of it. Bravo

Excuse the unclean glass, I only gave it a cursory rinse... a light and refreshing number this, probably more suited to sunshine than rainy London! The hops are dominating a bit here, but you still get a hint of honey sweetness at the end.

It's a bit like being punched in the mouth with blackcurrants. Very sharp to start with but you get a sweet aftertaste that stops it being all too much. A definite hit.
