Backwoods Bastard (2014)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice, and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Cousin David shipped this to me in December 2015 from Texas.. The ABV does not match the 2015 vintage therefore I am assuming this is 2014.

6 years probably a little long? Flavors were muted but present. Drank very easy, little burn, still bubbly

Still drinking pretty well. But has definitely lost its bite that I love. Still a beer I adore. But for sure a beer that is better fresh or with maybe one year max on it.

Man this is better than I expected. I'm at the Lititz beer fest. Can't tag it tho

A rating seems unfair as this has definitely fallen off, having said that at 7yo it's surprising this is still drinking well. Faded bourbon, sweet brown sugar/molasses like taste. Was expecting rubbing alcohol so I'm happy.

Significant drop-off from when I last opened one. Front end is malty, sweet, molasses, spice, oak but the middle and the finish are totally gone. The flavor is in the front end then it just disappears and finishes like water. Note to self, 5 year limit.

Scotch and leather, slightly boozy, and a blend of caramel and molasses in the base. Hella good for 8 years old.

9yrs old and it’s still a boozy one. A bit of caramel and toffee but oxidation has set in and there’s not much left here.

Past its prime now. Thinner than normal and definitely oxidized.
