Raison D'Extra (2014)

Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Our popular Raison D'Etre, with a little extra. This immodest brew, made with an obscene amount of malt, brown sugar and raisins, takes Belgian-style browns to new heights. See more at: http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/on-hiatus-brews/raison-dextra.htm

Bottled 11/14. Booziness has definitely faded with time. Not really hot at all. Thanks John!

The nose is just as rich and boozy as the day it was brewed. Still nicely carbonated, not as sweet or as complex as previous bottles I have had. Still a great celebratory beer!

In 07 & 14 they said it was brewed every 7 years. So I saved one for comparison, only to see they started making it ever year since 2017.....

Thick, creamy, smooth, rich, decadent… all those dark raisins really make this present like an extra quadruple. Tons of brown sugar on the nose. Chocolate. Alcohol bite has completely gone after 7 years, with some noticeable, but mild malt oxidation.

Seven years of aging, the label long gone, this has acquired a bit of a barleywine character more so than a Belgian, as the candi sugar nature is gone…but it still does not come across as ~18%. Sipper.

2014 - definitely past it’s prime - flavors are muted and not really taking me anywhere - the more recent years I’ve had of this were much better

Increased from 3.5 to a 4.0. Either the years sitting have improved its flavor profile, or I just now appreciate this beer so much more many years later.

The most powerful “on the nose” beer I’ve had. Oldest beer ever drank. Not sure how to rate this. Cheers to Ralph E. For sharing this interesting brew.

Straight raisins. Super strong nose… I really appreciate this beer although I can’t say that I like it.

Raisins through and through. An abundance of other dark fruit explodes on the nose and likewise the palate. Over 7 years old and yet the carbonation was spot on. Juicy Raisins on the front end with a dry merlot like finish. Excellent stuff.

Very boozy and sweet with a slightly fruity finish. Seems like those raisins are still coming through a bit after 8 years in a bottle.

8 yrs. Young. Brewed with a boatload of raisins so it tastes like a dark sherry or a light port. Spectacular.
