Backwoods Bastard (2012)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice, and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Cellar find along with the 3 others I've checked in previously. This has aged amazing for 12 years out. Big malty, bourbon remains. A fantastic old ale. Mellowed nicely and that toffee flavor is still up front

Cellar raid! Had to dig one of the old boys up since the Bastard is available year round now! Used to look forward to this release and Old Curmudgeon more than KBS! Love this style. The best BA Scotch Ale I've ever had! Barrel has faded as it's 11yrs old!

Backwoods flight. This is still holding up. I was worried since there's no real carbonation left but this is really good still. Nice bourbon

LCI. Age gags faded most of the flavors. Still good but not as good as fresh / mildly aged

Tasting great after 10 years. Lots of biscuity figgy malt, oak, hints of bourbony caramel, tobacco, and brown sugar into the finish. Backwoods is the crown jewel of the Founders lineup

Tasting fantastic after 9 years. Biscuity caramel, vanilla, raw cocoa, licorice, molasses, fig, oak. Very little in the way of oxidation and still tasting fantastic, though slightly past its peak I think.

Wow. This one is great. Legit. Nowhere near the oxidation the last 2012 that I drank had in it. One of the best cellar dwellers I have had in some time.

A bit more lively than the 2011. Not much heat left. I prefer this to the 2011 and 2015.

Cellared bottle. Body has thinned a lot. Quite silky smooth. Easy drinking, but has lost a lot of character. Past it's prime.

This has been preserved remarkably well. Slightly thinner mouthfeel and the flavors are a bit weaker, but not much.

This beer aged incredibly well, The alcohol burn is so minimum leaving such an incredible beer taste. The caramel has really come forward and taken the drivers seat. Very glad to have a taste of this old boy!
