Curmudgeon's Better Half

Old Ale

Curmudgeon is an old ale brewed with molasses and aged on oak; it becomes Better Half after aging—for 254 days—in bourbon barrels that have more recently been aging Michigan maple syrup. As a result, Curmudgeon’s Better Half is a bit sweeter than her miserly counterpart.

Old ales aren't really my thing but this one wasn't bad. Slightly sweet, and the molasses and barrel aging creates an interesting dynamic.

Bottle from 2011. It was probably great back in the day but seems so ordinary and thin now.

Not some who drinks many barrel aged things. For me it's hard to drink because of its strong back bone but everything else about this beer comes out so well so I can really enjoy it

Bottled 08.15.18. Drank this fresh and wasn’t crazy about it. 2 years has definitely improved this but it still has a medicinal finish. Like orange children’s liquid ibuprofen.

2018 release. Overall a solid barrel aged beer. May have let it sit too long because I struggled to get much beyond oxidization and molasses. Not bad by any means, I just remember drinking it younger and enjoying it more

Really good. Def get the molasses and it makes it smooth with a little sweetness. For sure boozy.

If I had to use one word to describe this it would be medicinal. Bottled in August of 2018

I love old curmudgeon and bourbon, but I feel the balance of the beer is lost. Heavy maple notes on the nose which are quickly lost in a boosy drink. To much time in the barrel for my taste.

Dejlig smagfuld øl, tæt på at være ligeså god som CBS. Dejlig smag af fad lagering. Og sirup i eftersmagen.

Takes a few sips to take on the flavor. Smells boozy but hits smooth. Would recommend

Sweetness balances the old-ness of the beer. Not bad but probably wouldn't have another. 3.6

Not sure of the year but it definitely has a few under it’s belt. Still quite good. Sweet molasses and only a tiny bit of oxidation. So, nicely holding up well. My first time having it. Thanks Mike!
