Backwoods Bastard (2016)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It's a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Age has washed a bit of the favor but it is sure mellow going down. A lot of the scotch ale flavors still present.

Cellar raid! Lots of molasses and oak and still very good sweetness on the back end with lots of oak barrel yum

Grabbed this bastard from the beer fridge thinking it might be a 2019. Upon opening I see the 2016 vintage. Never had one age that long. It did VERY well. I’ll do that again. Fantastic!!!

Last bottle. Cellared for 4 years. Delicious and mellow. Booze isn’t overpowering. Subtle sweetness to it

Falling off, a lot less bourbon, but plenty of dark fruit and brown sugar.

Very tasty, flavors are slightly muted, lots of flavor/carbonation remain but looks like 3 years will be the sweet spot. No burn. None left in the cellar after the fax fiasco

Please age backwoods longer and it would be soooooo good. Drinking 4 year aged backwoods in 2020 is so smooth and so flavorful its amazing.

It’s crossed a line after this long in the cellar. It’s flavor is very mellow but it has the dryness of an aged beer that doesn’t work as well with the sweetness.

Bourbon toffee on an exceptional wee heavy. Still holding on strong.

Nice finish. Subtle bourbon barrel aging. I tagged carmel rather than sweet.

This one wasn't as good, first the bottle exploded upon opening then taste had more of a bitterness vs my first 2. The last one I guess will tell if the bottle was bad or if the taste has plateaued.

This one has an odd medicine and oak taste going on. But also a candied fruit that the 15 didn’t have

Oudje uit Michigan, Backwoods Gandalf. Mooi in de whisky, karamel, gedroogd fruit en toch nog steeds flink in de lichtbittere kruidigheid. Scherpe randjes zijn eraf, heel mooi vol, doch zacht. Nomnomnom
