Zwanze 2022 - Poivre de Gorilles

Lambic - Other

This year’s Zwanze is a two-year-old Lambic blend with black pepper. For this year’s beer, we worked with Sandrine from Misao: La Maison des Poivres here in Brussels. Sandrine had us try various types of Congolese pepper, and we eventually decided on one called poivre de Gorilles. This pepper grows wild in the forests of the Republic of the Congo. Aromatic, but not too spicy, it blends beautifully with the refreshing acidity of our Lambic. The result is a beer that will pair marvelously with meat or fish. The name poivre de Gorilles comes from the area where it grows, in Likouala Forest, located in the northeastern region of the Republic of the Congo. This forest is home to a significant population of Lowland gorillas – a species in danger of extinction. That’s why we’ll be donating a portion of the profits from the event to Gorilla (https://www.gorilla.fr/), an organization which works to protect these Great Apes.

Ça marche toujours aussi bien, beau poivre avec des notes de citronnelle et de pamplemousse et un bon lambic, un peu jeune, derrière, peu acide, bien puissante et bien équilibrée

No pic, still waiting for the pic from Yves G. So until then, a screenshot of his check. 😜

I managed to get hold of this year's edition finally. The Congolese pepper is added in just the right amount to add life and complexity without overwhelming the rest of the quite nuanced palate.

Much better from bottle than from draft. This is actually balanced now. Still heavy on the aromatics but some overkill is required for a Zwanze release right

I had to miss Zwanze this year. A kindly gentleman just gave me a glass of it as consolation. This is really nice. The pepper comes through as it warms, but it's subtle. Probably my favourite Zwanze beer for a while.

Verassend lekker. Gekregen van onze buren, mooie peper smaak zonder pikant te zijn.

Strong herbal pepper notes but without any zing or bite. Really nice lambic base. Will be interesting to see how this develops

Like this one, it’s like a peppery geuze but nice balanced.

Went to Bruxelles last week, but forgot to check in the most. So here is a bunch of LCI’s. This one was really experimental, peppery, sharp - and at the same time softly in the aftertaste -
