Raison D'Extra (2018)

Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Our Raison D'Etre, with a little extra. This immodest brew, made with an obscene amount of malt, brown sugar and raisins, takes Belgian-style browns to new heights. Raison D'Extra's little brother Raison D'Etre was brewed to be the ultimate beer partner for steak. Plump raisins and beet sugars give the beer a similar DNA and color to red wine. D'Extra takes this concept to the next level. What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, D'Extra is the D'Etre. We're pushing the limits of what a Belgian yeast can do (and we've discovered that's somewhere in the ballpark of 15% to 18% ABV!) D'Extra is extremely complex and a great candidate for aging. Sip on one with a loved one now, and stash a few in your beer cellar! As Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says, "This puppy's only getting better with age."

Another strong cellar beer to cap off the weekend. Bottled 12/13/18. Boozy flavors have mellowed, still get some raisins and brown sugar.

Malts on malts. Lots of pumpernickel bread pudding, fruit cake, raisin, fig, toffee. Not much booze, but its definitely a big beer. Good stuff

Mistakenly opened this. Wanted to age 5-10 years to get it ripe and delicious. Right now, a boozy barleywine full of malts and caramel

16.5% Belgian Strong Dark Ale brewed with raisins. I’m at a loss about the raisins, I can taste them, but this brew is about the Belgian Strong Dark Ale and the ABV. If they tried to hide the ABV they failed! Smooth and heavy bodied this is a sipping ale!

Sweet brown sugar and raisin dominate. Mild Belgium hints. Full of flavor. Should have aged this a few more years but could not resist. Feeling some heat on this big 16%. Hope they continue to make this. Outstanding!
