Bottle Shop Series Highball Drifter Czapka

Legitimately had no idea what to expect from this guy, but for a beer it hits the old fashioned notes surprisingly well.

Fou' Foune (2019) Czapka

Doesn’t quite have the usual pop that I expect. Big green apple notes on the nose, less so on the palate. Just not my favorite version of this beer, even as I enjoy it.

KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge Czapka

The velvety body is still there, but the chocolatey, fudgy character is so overwhelming that this doesn’t taste anything like classic KBS, even as it’s still a damn tasty beer.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2020) Czapka

Like a milder version of the ‘17, the body is a bit heartier than it’s been for the last few years, and the coffee and chocolate have hung out with solid balance, but the total effect is just not quite as strong as the ‘17.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2019) Czapka

This beer was undoubtedly a course correction from the ‘18, even as both this beer and that beer were completely unnecessary course corrections. Still, the body is a bit fuller, and the coffee hangs around nicely from sip to swallow.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2018) Czapka

Moving down the line, the ‘18 is carrying its adjuncts a bit more effectively than the ‘17, even as it initially lacked balance. This is still carrying a ton of chocolate, but the body is noticeably thinner and the coffee is all but gone now.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2017) Czapka

The body has held up nicely, providing a nice velvety sip, but the coffee has faded down to mere bitterness and the cacao is nowhere to be found. The oldest of the crew just doesn’t have that same punch, which shouldn’t be too surprising.

Panther Cub (2021) Czapka

Getting a little more maple as it warms, but the vanilla has a bit of artificial harshness and doesn’t quite cohere with the rest of the beer.

Panther Cub Czapka

Heartier than your average porter, but the vanilla and maple are quite a bit milder than I was expecting them to be.

The fudge character punches through more than anything else, even after some months of aging.

Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) (2019) Czapka

An interesting experiment, because where the ‘18 had more balance, this has more intensity even as some of the flavor notes have subsided in weird ways. If you don’t overthink this, it’s awfully tasty.

Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) (2018) Czapka

Pleasantly surprised that this is aging gracefully—even as the adjuncts fade, the remnants are blending together really nicely.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2020) Czapka

Definitely subsided a bit, but the nose is super coffee-forward, while the palate is layers of bitterness from the bean and the cacao.

50 Degrees N - 4 Degrees E (2018) (Brandy) Czapka

Not sure that the brandy barrel character really leaps off the palate here, but it still has the classic Belgian farmhouse nose in full effect, with a hugely funky but dry palate, and a smooth, mildly tart finish. Simply delicious!
