Vigneronne (2017)

Lambic - Fruit

The name Vigneronne Cantillon was given in 1987. This name reminds us that, while it belongs to the beer patrimony, the spontaneous fermentation, the ageing in the barrels for several years and the addition of grapes make it a distant cousin of certain white wines. In spite of its success, the Vigneronne represents less than 5% of the total production of the Cantillon brewery. In order to obtain grapes which are as mature as possible, we buy them at the end of the season. Every year, 1000 kilos of white italian grapes are delivered at the Cantillon brewery in the beginning of October.

Absurd aroma. Funky, moldy, leathery. Dry, rustic, wild. Elegant and classy. Great vinous feel. Green grapes and apple/pear. Cheesy. Sweat, horse, hay, farm. Totally refreshing. Juicy. Low-medium bodied, silky, smooth, crispy. Beautiful. Impressive. Huge.

More tartness than typical for a ‘loon. Strawberry sour patch kid hit the nose as soon as the cork popped. Nice.

This batch was pretty tart. The increased acid covered up the subtle grapes.

Elderflower, hay, muscat, spice, grass like complexed character. Strong tartness, almost no sweetness and bitterness. Low levels of astringency. Very dry mouthfeel. Medium carbonation, medium body. Tart aftertaste with some elderflower like flavor.

Bought this bottle from Brewer’s Fork shortly after the pandemic shut everything down. Been sleeping in my cellar since. Weird to think of those early days.

Bottled 22 October 2017. Probably the best Vig I've had since now. The ageing did wonders on this one. It got a musty essence in the mouthfeel, making it stand up after Racine 2021. A really delicate character with the grapes and the vinous notes shine.
