Backwoods Bastard (2016)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It's a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Found in a lost corner. Great flavor still but a bit of sediment left over. Late check in

Last bottle. Bought 8 on release at the source. Muddy like the Detroit River. Coffee, barley sugar, dark chocolate. Drinks like an old school old ale. Delicious.

Not aging great, sadly, but far from unpleasant. Still a good amount of caramel and toffee, and the faintest hint of heat remains.

Notes were of slight caramel like sweetness and subtle wood. Palate was weaker than the 2015 but had hints of caramel, oak, and dark fruits. 4.1

A five year old barrel, Giddy up (Cosmo K.) I can't say no. Still has that smoked malt, I'm still getting a boozy bite excess sweetness has fallen off leaving an earthy body.

Roasty, light smoke, peat notes, bourbon bite. Fading, but still tasty.

Tonight I'm gonna do a comparison between 2016 & 2017 Backwards Bastard! 2016 up 1st! ❤ Carmel & sweet dark fruit, nice & bitter on the tongue, vanilla, slight oak notes It held up and aged pretty well!!

So much better aged! Smokey, earthy flavor with a warm bourbon undertone. It's delicious in 2021.

BB date is June 2018. Likely past its prime. But you can still appreciate the caramel aspects withtout the wood from the barrel ageing. Note to self…stop waiting so long!
