Birra Etrusca Bronze

Gruit / Ancient Herbed Ale

The backbone of Birra Etrusca comes from two-row malted barley and an heirloom Italian wheat. Specialty ingredients include hazelnut flour, pomegranates, Italian chestnut honey, Delaware wildflower honey and clover honey. A handful of whole-flower hops are added, but the bulk of the bitterness comes from gentian root and the sarsaparilla-like Ethiopian myrrh resin.

2015 bottle. This beer is unlike anything I've ever tried. Seems more like a juice. Knowing this is no longer in production makes me very sad.

Honey and fruity. Maybe some slight boldness to the body due to being nearly 9 years old. But still a tasty treat. The brew was bottled on 6/15/2015.

This is the first beer that I've ever had taste like a mead. Pomegranate on the nose, a bit overpowering amount of sweetness from the honey. Super cool.

A nice old bottle. Some fruity notes with almost a pomegranate molasses note. Held up to some age well.

My third, and easily favorite, of the Ancient Ales. Maybe not the greatest thing going but the flavor they pull out of this using an approximation of ancient ingredients is really impressive. Nice balance between the sweet and sour.

Quite tasty, not sure about all the other stuff but it tastes like beer-y pomegranate juice. Mild tart

Solid. I get a nice amount of honey and fruit, sweet without being overly so. Get a bit of herbal note as well.

Fascinating flavor - like the common ancestor of wine and beer. A fruity, honey-inflected palate that has the finish of bubblegum or wax (totally in a good way), with the body and mouthfeel of a beer. Hiding on the wine rack; who knows how old it is.

Sour nose with a mouthfeel of the punch to the palate. Finish is very floral, close to a potpourri type. Thank you Darth M. Its been too long Cody.

Bottled 06/03/2014. Almost 10. It was definitely better than fresh which is whacky for an 8.5 abv with this much crap shoved in it. Very enjoyable and somehow makes me crave more Theobroma which I have none of anymore.

Didn't have high hopes for a 2012 gruit. I'll have to compare with a recent brew. It has good carbonation, a subtle burn finish for an 8.5% abv and it seems this beer has aged well. As flavor goes, it taste fruity like a grape soda with herbs and honey.

Interesting. This is has been in the basement for a loooooooooomg time. It seems to have done it well. Light, fruity, and very much like a liquid raisin. Neat.
