Zwanze 2022 - Poivre de Gorilles

Lambic - Other

This year’s Zwanze is a two-year-old Lambic blend with black pepper. For this year’s beer, we worked with Sandrine from Misao: La Maison des Poivres here in Brussels. Sandrine had us try various types of Congolese pepper, and we eventually decided on one called poivre de Gorilles. This pepper grows wild in the forests of the Republic of the Congo. Aromatic, but not too spicy, it blends beautifully with the refreshing acidity of our Lambic. The result is a beer that will pair marvelously with meat or fish. The name poivre de Gorilles comes from the area where it grows, in Likouala Forest, located in the northeastern region of the Republic of the Congo. This forest is home to a significant population of Lowland gorillas – a species in danger of extinction. That’s why we’ll be donating a portion of the profits from the event to Gorilla (https://www.gorilla.fr/), an organization which works to protect these Great Apes.

Zwanze Day beer. Had a big peppery nose, but the flavor was on point.

The pepper was a very interesting addition and done in just the right proportion, couldn't have asked for more.

Catching up on Brussels drinks. Pro tip: If you go to the brewery right after Zwanze Day, there might be vintages you can try. I thought I would not like this version, the black pepper did not sound appealing. Then I tried it. Wow, it works.

I'm a bit obsessed with pepper, so this particularly hits the spot for me. The nose alone is amazing, but it tastes even better. Lots of the usual and wonderful pink peppercorn notes, but a few additional layers on top

Pepper on the nude nose carries through to a spicy palate. Bright tartness, herbal complexity with sour cola cubes. Outrageously good

Sadly missed Zwanze day this year as it coincided with our Oktoberfest event 😬. This has to be my favourite Zwanze beer so far absolutely incredible. Bold pepper flavour that works harmoniously in this beautiful Lambic.

Incredible . So much black pepper, pepperiest beer ever imagined. Unique. Somehow still awesomely balanced. It works.

Part of me feels like this just needs the top rating because of how unusual and special it is. Amazing pepper taste but also fruity.

Wow. The pepper tickles your nose a little. So different and unqiue. Love it.

Flabbergasted. Freshly ground black pepper on the nose, with wonderful citrus mid palate and just a hint of spicy pepper on the lingering finish. Amazing.

This is more peppery than I remember on Zwanze Day. That’s not a bad thing, and the lambic works well with the black pepper. But it’s more notable to me.

Utvikler seg i en nydelig retning. Fortsatt intens, men florale sitrustoner tar over for den rene peppersmaken fra da den var fersk. Nærmer seg perfeksjon!

Out of all the beers by the bottle I had at Cantillon, the Harambe lambic was probably the one I revisited the most, excellent show of creativity.
