Curmudgeon’s Better Half (2018)

Old Ale

What tames an old ale like Curmudgeon? The tender embrace of oak and sweet maple, that’s what. The result is Curmudgeon’s Better Half, a harmonious matrimony of our deceptively smooth old ale brewed with molasses and time spent aging in bourbon barrels that have previously held maple syrup. Because all counterparts should be sweet, rich and utterly delicious.

Spring cleaning lead me to this. An excellently matured old ale with a lot of punch.

En sødlig men tør duft. Masser af brød og mørke noter. Smagen er fyldig og rund. Lkoholen er afdempet og fadet sørger for en tør finish. Super lækker!

Brought the 2018 up from the cellar. Feel like I might be getting a little oxidation, could be time to drink these. Sweet, strong & boozy. Lots of oak, maple/molasses + a noticeable sharp bite. Should I age longer here, or is it time to drink/share?

In eerste instantie vol en zoet, maar een paar slokken verder vind ik ‘m redelijk moutig of is het de melasse? Geen idee 🤷🏽‍♂️ weinig ervaring mee! Maar voor de rest wel een genietbaar biertje...

Aged for 2 1/2 years after bottling; dark bronze in color; medium bodied; sweet; finishes with a strong molasses flavor; cannot detect the bourbon barrel or alcohol; cannot detect maple; very good and strong; but more sweet than anything.

Love it more each time I drink one. Sweet, malty, a little barrel and molasses spice. Ultimately, not a huge range of flavors but the flavors that are present are very enjoyable.

8.14.18 Lots of bourbon, not a lot of maple. Solid though after 2 1/2 years.

Pulled an August 2018 bottle out of my cellar. Awesome copper color. Not much aroma for me, but nice and smooth with a hint of molasses and then bourbon at the end. Seems stronger than 12.7.

Smells of Bourbon. And tastes of bourbon at first, then maple, then barrel. Very good. A little boozy but fits well in with the flavors.

Been awhile since I had anything from Founders. This is quite good. Boozy but in a good way. Caramel with a slightly woodsy undertone.

Ages beautifully. All the subtle, sweet flavors are easily picked up and not washed out by the higher alcohol content.

Dark auburn color. Aroma has toffee, fudge. Tastes thick, fudgey, mapley, comfortingly boozy, wonderful stuff. One of the most pure comfort beers I could imagine. 4.25.

Bottled on 8/28/18?!!! Not sure how a 2018 release was still on the store shelf 2.5 years after it's release but I'll take it. Score! Full bodied, sweet, rich mouthfeel. Great complexity! Delicious beer.

Still a sweet higher ABV Old Ale! So, yes, the stash is still getting dipped into even after the snow is gone. Well at least it’s gone in Texas...wink

A few years have done this beer very well. Nice sweetness from the maple with just a touch of boozy heat from the bourbon barrels. The perfect sipping beer on a cool winter night.
