Backwoods Bastard (2016)

Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It's a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Dug deep in the cellar to find this… smooth caramel bourbon with a touch of smoke… still great

Following the Drago, this seems dull. Might be better in a bit once it warms

Cellar aged 5.5 years. Most flavors have fallen off. Sweet malt and molasses hitting so smooth that it’s almost watery. Aged too long IMO.

2016 vintage. This thing has gotten smooooth! Almost no booziness whatsoever. Sweet and caramel right away with just a touch of oak. Wouldn’t go back in vintages any further, this is almost to the point of oxidation.

Likely a bit past due, but aged reasonably well. Some of the body is gone- less sweet and more booze

This used to be a favorite circa 2013/2014. I have one bottle of 2016 left down in the cellar. Still drinking pretty strong. Burnt sugar/toffee/molasses.

The oak is definitely more prominent. The flavor balance is much more drinkable. Probably the longest it should be aged??

Nose: Dark Fruit, something kinda off in my opinion (Jason doesn't agree - he really liked the nose, but I think he's kinda drunk). Palate: Light Mouthfeel, Dark Fruit(s), Caramel(s). Finish: Dry, Bitter(s). Today's rating: 4.00.

Held up quite nicely. Most the bourbon and bolder flavors aged out. A touch oxidized. Nose is less harsh and much more malt focused. Smooth and nutty ale is what's left, very smooth for the abv. Probably a few years too long, misses out without the barrel
