Zwanze 2022 - Poivre de Gorilles

This year’s Zwanze is a two-year-old Lambic blend with black pepper. For this year’s beer, we worked with Sandrine from Misao: La Maison des Poivres here in Brussels. Sandrine had us try various types of Congolese pepper, and we eventually decided on one called poivre de Gorilles. This pepper grows wild in the forests of the Republic of the Congo. Aromatic, but not too spicy, it blends beautifully with the refreshing acidity of our Lambic. The result is a beer that will pair marvelously with meat or fish. The name poivre de Gorilles comes from the area where it grows, in Likouala Forest, located in the northeastern region of the Republic of the Congo. This forest is home to a significant population of Lowland gorillas – a species in danger of extinction. That’s why we’ll be donating a portion of the profits from the event to Gorilla (https://www.gorilla.fr/), an organization which works to protect these Great Apes.

Smells powerfully peppery like good marinated meat or pastrami. Top quality black pepper. Salty and even a bit balsamic at nose. What is surprising is that same pepper note is soft on palate. Like a lot the acidity which is balanced. Softly carbonated.

2-year lambic, minimal carbonation, cloudy amber color, sour pepper nose, first taste is strong pepper which mellows as palate calibrates. A little sweetness shines through tartness. Pepper lingers.

气泡微弱。 闻香黑胡椒 柠檬 金桔 生姜,中等酸感,funky味在摇杯和回温后会出现,若隐若现。入口酸度锋利,海盐 胡椒 柠檬 金桔,中段一些盐津 话梅,尾段一些橙皮带来轻微苦感。收口干净,回味绵长优雅。 酒体轻盈,杀口感弱,较为棉柔。 个人觉得酸度还是稍显尖锐,中后段风味持续较短,层次感很棒。

Looks innocuous enough but packs a whale of a peppery nose: ground black pepper, distant gueuze. Palate brings mouthwatering gueuze tartness in, and it all works surprisingly well together. Did not expect to like this as much as I do. At Perry’s
