20 Ans d’Amitié (Draft Version) Brew
In focus, just behind some tasty cambembert w kriek mustard and pickled apples. It was very tasty and also another gem of today's Zwanze Day celebration. Nice barrel notes serve as background to rhubarb, dark cherry, berry, and light stone fruit. 4.55

Brew is just behind a lamb lollipop and potato terrine. Bright and brilliant dark cherry pairs with nice woody flavors. Have to say this was magnificent on draft and probably one of the best krieks I've ever had on draft. Excellent solid tartness. 4.35

Well, it was certainly interesting. Very unlike any other Cantillon I've ever had. Ultimately, judging it purely on its individual merits, I found it enjoyable. Very briny, a bit salty, lemony, iodine, and "fresh-from-the-sea" tastiness. 4.25

Paired with scallops in a crab sauce - both were very good. The Vig worked well with this food as it was fairly light and effervescent, yielding some white wine, light melon, and lemon. Was a little sharp in spots, but still pretty soft, IMO. 4.35

Superb. Time did this well. Cognac instilled dark fruit / prune in the background of what was ultimately a very balanced brew, including lemon, orange peel, warm / old apple (yes, that worked in the mix), nice tartness and very nice funk. Awesome. 4.55

Cuvée Saint-Gilloise (Champions) (2017) Brew
LCI. Very good, and I loved the use of this variant of Hallertau to make this all the more tasty and easy to drink. Nice spice, light herb, earth, grass, and light wood all factored in along w the expected floral, sour, and light funk flavors. 4.4

LCI. This was absolutely fantastic. Served properly, too! Huge fan of the balance of pepper and lemon notes on top of the lambic base. The palate on this was extremely clean, with slight underlying floral peeking out through the spiciness. Wow. 4.55

Very pleased to see this on draft today. Quite nice. Started off w upfront stone fruit, funk, and some peach, but settled down as it warmed up and yielded minerals, light white wine, and a peppery edge. Fair amount of carb that reduced gradually. 4.55

LCI. A beauty of a brew from Cantillon (not that I've really experienced anything less from them). Excellently featured port barrel notes that added subtle dark fruit and black grape notes. Hay, oak, lemon, wine tannins, and some funk also showed up. 4.35

LCI. Some nice light funk and fresh honeydew flavors reinforce just how much of a classic this brew is. Super easy drinking with the light juiciness from the stone fruit makes for a highly accessible mouthfeel leading to a citrusy/slightly dry finish. 4.3

LCI. Looking forward to trying more vintages of this in the future. Awesome tart, sour, and light citrusy flavors were generated by the rhubarb. Good spice in this brew - light pepper primarily - with a dry and slightly vinuous finish. Awesome. 4.45

LCI. I was very happy to try another vintage of this unique and tasty brew. Solid pear and floral flavors feom the very present elderflower. Earthy, dry, tart, and very slightly funky body that built well thanks to the wheat and malts. 4.35

A GREAT way to end an evening. There is some really solid funk development that hangs out on the palate, and the raspberries are fantastic. Tartness is present but not overwhelming and yields additional cherry and lemon notes as this warms up. 4.5

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2016) 12.4% Brew
Well, this aged pretty well. Licorice, tobacco / smoke, solid dark chocolate, lighter caramel, and very nice barrel. Much better vs. when I had this previously 4 years ago and definitely more variety on the palate from the aging results. 4.35

LCI. Had high hopes this one would age well. A little let down with a thinner body, but still rewarded with some nice flavor notes of raisin, prune, light cardamom, and light chocolate. Mixed feelings... probably should've opened 3 years ago. 3.9

Great one to split among friends. Very fruity, on the level of Magic Lambic without the vanilla, and hits the right proportions of sour and sweet, with flavors of cranberry, cherry Starburst, raspberry, and also some dark fruit development. 4.45

LCI. This was ok, with higher than expected tart flavors of cranberry and raspberry for the time already on it. Beyond that, very little depth and a very light body, along with minimal carbonation, roughed up the overall mouthfeel. 3.5

Spectacular brew 2nd only to the Vig today. Still plenty of carb with ~11 years on it. Very refreshing mouthfeel on this and even more diverse fruitiness versus the 2015 vintage. In addition to apricot, I also got raspberry and peach. Mellowed well. 4.75

First time trying this line from Cantillon. Started out super earthy with big floral scents (almost perfumy) and a vinuous nose. Very big pepper and spruce tip flavors tended to dominate the palate with slight green grape hints. Unique and tasty. 4.25

A great ender to today's fun with Cantillon. More reserved earthiness with more time on this vintage, floral/rose petals (also more subtle), slight tartness and funk developing in the body. More great pepper and pine resin flavors as well. 4.35

Dang good. Tart and acidic body initially that becomes less so as it breathes and warms up. Flavors of raspberry, cranberry, red currant, light funk, and a very slight vanilla like sweetness that kicks in towards the end. Very satisfying and unique. 4.55

Lots of upfront tartness to start that gradually reduces. Fairly solid fruitiness - got a ton of apricots, along with slight berry and overripe peach in the body. Fairly soft and smooth in the body, but with a nice dry and somewhat clean finish. 4.6

Very tasty vintage. Deep red color body. Solid palate with nice flavor complexity. Got notes of dark cherry, cracked pepper, red grape, dry syrah/red table wine, blood orange, light peach, and some light funk beyond the fruit. 4.5

Another stunner that was drinking nicely with the time on it. Big carbonation from the pour. Slight red/brown colors. Nice bramble nose. Body on this was vinuous and slightly funky with very good dark cherry, melon, cantaloupe, and light peach. 4.65

Outstanding! Slight funk in nose and body with a solid oak background and nice woodiness. Fruit flavors of cantaloupe and melon help build and hold the palate nicely. A hint of pepper that got a little more apparent as it warmed up. Really good. 4.5

Another stunner. The body was musty, but a lot of great carb and effervescence were still hanging out. Fruit flavors seem to have blossomed as it sat - got light peach, Macintosh apple, and some dark cherry as well. Pepper stood out more, too. 4.6

For me, the star among many stars today, and frankly, one of the best I've ever had from Cantillon. Great carbonation. Excellent pepper envelops the nose and body throughout. Light but distinct funk, green grape, lemon, and some woodiness in the body. 4.8

A great start to a fun afternoon. Big nose of funk with melon ball scents and a very light smokiness. More melon in body along w notes of apple cider, slight grape, light peach skins, and lemon peel. Just the right level of tartness to help balance. 4.4

Whew. Some damn good carbonation for the time on it. Murky and musty body appearance. Nose had solid funk. Flavors open up slightly metallic but develop nicely into notes of nice green apple and melon. Mouthfeel featured a nice clean ending. 4.55

Excellent. Definitely mellowed with age in a good way. Decent funk development along with hay, mineral spices apparent. Smooth body - best result of the age - made this one a delight to drink. 4.55

Big grapes in this one from the gewurtzstraimer and some nice sweet notes that represented that wine style well. Very slight woodsy backdrop with some stone fruit flavors as well from the lambic. Slight grappa flavor from the pomace. Impressive. 4.6

Lou Pepe Framboise (2007) Brew
Awesome - second only to LPK for today's best of so many incredible brews.Big, big fruit flavors of raspberry, cherry, and slight melon - simply top notch framboise. Very slight acidity, remarkable for the age. This one was an absolute treat. 4.7

Awesome. A slightly musty but mainly fruity nose leads to raspberry, cranberry, and a slight smoky edge mixed with solid earthiness in the body. More hay / barnyard type flavors came through as this one warmed up. Excellent aging results. 4.7

Yet another great opportunity today to try multiple vintages together - in this case, 10 years apart. While the 2009 had more overall depth, the bright grape and berry flavors are more prominent and super tasty. Vinuous and earthy body w slight funk. 4.55

My favorite of the day. Intensely fruity dark cherry permeated throughout and provided nice tart/sour balance. Drifted into chianti territory as it warmed up. Pretty clean and smooth body overall and a near perfect drinker on this humid afternoon. 4.75

Tried my best to get into this one - it simply didn't hold up all that well. Raisin, prune, and light toffee from the barleywine are starting to develop; however, it feels like there is a hop imbalance against the malts. It was fine, just not great. 3.6

Lou Pepe Framboise (2012) Brew
My goodness. What a way to start out the latter part of the afternoon w many good friends. 10 years of age did great wonders here - raspberry remained solid, slight funk development, really nice results from the oak - just super smooth and tasty. 4.7

Might look like sludge in the pic, but it is drinking damn good now. Has basically transformed into an imperial brown ale that is giving off notes of wood/oak, raisin, toffee, and a little smoke. Can certainly tell that the ABV has increased, lol. 4.4

FLN - and a wonderful ending to last night's festivities. Good funk development within a short period of time, and really enjoyed the fruitiness - orange and peach being the main standout flavors. Great oak on the back. Terrifically tart as well. 4.55

Very impressive. Gin-like body from the add of the hops and the reduction of the wheat. Slight peachiness and light pear, bit of spice, and a fairly good amount of funk development. Really well done and def tasting the results of the sit. 4.55

So....this one truly floored me. Had a few Cantillons up to now, but nothing like thus. Huge apricot and peach scents, and still a lot of fruitiness in the body. Love the oak as well. This is honestly one of the best beers I've ever had, so time for...

Maple Barrel Aged Frangelic Mountain Brown Brew
Well, this is an impressive offering from Founders. 1-10-21 bottle that retained the maple and hazelnut flavors very well, in both the nose and the body. I'm still a sucker for aged KBS but would happily drink this again. Good coffee roasts, too. 4.3

"Beet-y" nose, as described by our server at one of the best bars on the planet - so happy to be back here - but opens up so well, and getting the tart cherry, beet/rhubarb, and overripe peach. Excellent. Missed 2021 Z Day, but very happy w this. 4.55

Cuvée Saint-Gilloise (Champions) (2018) Brew
When at Monk's...have to have a Cantillon. Nice subtle oak, very tasty funk that is well developed, and good peach / plum notes also. Liking it a lot and goes well with Monk's mussels. 4.4, rounding up.

01-14-15 bottle. Held up quite well 6 years later. Molasses, raisin, caramel are all still present. Pretty impressive aging work. A pretty good one for yet another NE cold night...4.05

Nice woody /oak flavors here, good cranberry type flavors coming through with some solid funk developing. Some interesting dank scents coming through on the nose...which completely work here. This is a beaut. Thxs for opening Garry W. 4.55

1-22-16 bottle pulled from cellar. Liking how well this is drinking now. Oak is most prevalent and maple/vanilla are, of course, faded, but good spice notes of cardamom and nutmeg from the age. Nice for a change up in style...solid 4

KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge (2020) Brew
Well done. Nose has huge fudge in particular. Maple syrup is subtle at first but more prominent later. Do like the barrel's impact here too- this would probably sit well, might be even better in 12 months. Liking it enough now. 4.3
