Oloroso Barrel-Aged Olde School Barleywine Estariel
Go big or go home. Huge malty sweetness tempered with toffee. The sherry barrel character adds a layer of mild tartness, which is fine. I would say that I wish this was bottled and would permit more aging. Even so, this is a wonderful brew!

This a few years older and is still very good. Belgian strong with a deep maltiness. Dark cherry colour, deep raisin notes that have mellowed with that time.

Utopias Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA Estariel
This is the 2022 iteration and is beginning to mellow a bit, but is still intense. Crisp and malty sweet, but beginning to deepen. For me, this is still a blessing from Gambrinus.

120 Minute IPA (2014) Estariel
I cracked this open to celebrate Laura's completion of the Destiny 2 game campaign the Saga of Light and Dark, which was 10 years in the making. Congratulations to all the players! The beer, of course, aged well and is still amazing.

This is still a quintessential piney IPA. Just the thing I needed after wrestling with tech issues this afternoon. Happy Friday!

A hazy IPA that really speaks to what a hazy should be to me. The finish is quite nice, but the whole experience is nose to finish is exceptional. They should can this. Just sayin'.

It was nice to drink this again. So many good memories of the 2012 Dogfish Dash and this served post-race.
Very much a West Coast IPA. Hops everywhere, but the bitterness on the finish was a chef's kiss. Quite enjoyable.
Quite the interesting brew for a Baltic Porter. Notes of cherry and chocolate dance through and then leave a dryness that is balanced and luscious.
Light tangerine coloured and hazy. Hops on the nose and citrus throughout. Hops dance on the tongue, but don't stomp. Hoppy and bright.
Lovely straw colour. Very faint hints of lemongrass on the nose, the lime comes through towards the middle and finish. Clean, clear and crisp, especially at the finish.
Brewed for last year's Record Store Day. Hazy tangerine colour and faint tropical notes. I could taste the amaranth, especially on the front. Amaranth is a lovely ancient grain to brew with. ABV is nearly invisible and is easy drinking hazy.

What a better brew to have to celebrate the tail-end of winter -- think spruce trees and snow -- and Leap Day (Off-Centered, anyone)? This DFH brew spoke to me. And, of course, the beer is delicious!

Wake Up World Wide Stout Estariel
I thought this was going to be too coffee-forward, but instead this is perfectly balanced. Lovely coffee flavour blended with the malty, roasty stout. A celebratory brew to toast the end of Lunar New Year and Presidents Day weekend.

120 Minute IPA (2020) Estariel
How else does one celebrate 120 Day? This has matured nicely with the hops still shine. There is a subtle undercurrent of currants and raisins, with a maltiness that just underscores the quality. Bright and warming.
Roasted malt on the nose with a deep tan head. Inky brown colour with a pronounced bitterness. Cocoa may be contributing to that. Coconut is faint. Coffee is a note, too. Blindly, I would tagged this a porter. Still, this is a nice brew.
This crowler was tapped from a 2017 batch. It is malty and the viscous sweetness has mellowed with depths of raisins and dark stone fruits. This version may not have stayed as stable as it should have, but it is still nice.
This is the 2023 iteration and it is still a joy to drink. Beautifully clear amber colour, with that piney, resinous and hoppy character front, middle and finish. The grist gets out of the way and makes this a lovely brew, even for winter.
Nice. Definitely could taste the juniper berries and needles.
Very rich and the Baltic porter qualities shine through, but the barrel aging really deepens the intensity.

Utopias Barrel - Aged World Wide Stout (2021) Estariel
Still an excellent brew. Aging well and mellowing nicely. Cheers to all on this Friday after Thanksgiving!

Rip Van Winkle World Wide Stout Estariel
Smooth and more mellow than my original check in. Thin head, deep brown with garnet highlights. There is a hint of the wheat, but more bourbon. More depth and complexity than straight WWS, which is nice.
This was a very nice farmhouse ale and am glad that it stayed relatively fresh while stored in the fridge for far too long. As with all Dogfish ales, this one makes me like it even when I don't enjoy the style. If you never sipped this, you missed it.

Pennsylvania Tuxedo 2022 Estariel
While I am not as fond of this iteration of Penn Tux as the earlier one, this is still quite nice. Pale gold, clear and clean. Nice spruce resin in the middle that carries through to the finish with a bit of malt, a bit of hops and a gentle bitterness.

Utopias Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA (2020) Estariel
This, for me, is as close to perfection as a beer should be. Deep golden ruby highlights. Ivory head. A bit hoppy and fusel on the nose, with rich, gently caramel notes. No burn, slightly viscous mouthfeel. Caramel, with golden raisins. Lovely.

This one is from 2020 and I have an embarrassment of riches and need to whittle down my stash. Would that I could share this beauty with you all. Still bright and luscious. Cheers!

World Wide Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged Estariel
Wow. I can't believe I had this over a year ago. It has been one of those weeks, so this is welcome. Rich, but the bourbon character is not too pronounced. The fusel intensity has gently mellowed and what remains is a lovely warmth to cheer a rainy day.
Mahogany in colour with little carbonation. Figs, prunes on the nose. Rich viscous mouthfeel with no fusel burn. Molasses, but with that barleywine joy. The angels certainly got their share, but I'm glad I got mine. Paired with a 2017 Olde School.
Toggle between this and my 2007 check-in for today. This Olde School is much different. More like a very recent one. Dark brown, more effervescent and a bit of fusel character. Thinner, but more typically expected of the style. See 2007 check-in today.

Finishing up the crowler and it was scrumptious.

Utopias Barrel - Aged World Wide Stout (2021) Estariel
Still so glad I bought a case of this and have some bottles left. Just the best to celebrate an impending weekend. Happy Friday!
Looks like an unfiltered, hazy apple cider, but with a creamy, tan head. Maple syrup and brown sugar compliment the gently tart apple. The 9.2 ABV is subtle and balanced. Glad I still had a can of this left.
An Ancient Ale that is aged and I was pleasantly surprised that it aged fine. Even the chillies survived to lend a nice gentle spice

Oloroso Sherry Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA Estariel
Still wonderful even a year+ on from when it went into the crowler. This is the way to celebrate 120 Day (1/20)!
This truly is a great iteration of this beer. Not too piney, but the spruce shines through the hops. Light maple syrup in colour, but not sweet, just a hint of malt. Christmas tree in a can.

Perfect for a holiday meal or party. See my other check-in for more details.

Utopias Barrel - Aged World Wide Stout (2021) Estariel
It's been a crazy week, so it deserves a crazy high ABV brew born from an even crazier ABV beer. Perfectly balanced roastiness with a deep molasses complexity. Week? What week? 😁
over 2 years ago
Wonderful hazy. Live the spicy hoppy goodness. Nice lemony colour and haze is pretty.
This is a glass of Thanksgiving cheer. Apple pie spices on the nose. Fifer Orchard apples marry perfectly with this ale. Hints of maple syrup add just the right amount of sweetness.
Still amazing, even more 2 years on. Not your typical barleywine, as the colour is so dark, even stout-like. Definitely a bit of a puzzle, but I'll drink to that. This was the last DFH beer we bought just before the pandemic hit.

Still had one in the fridge and decided it needed a friend. Didn't have an English porter or mild given the gravity of the day, oh well. God save the King!
Nice pilsner. The Kernza wheat is not too prevalent, but does add some complexity. While not a lager person, this is a brew to enjoy on a summer day: crisp and clean.
Superlative. Simply incredible. Deep ruby colour. Not as sweet as less aged vintages. Smooth with no discernable fusel burn. Aged perfectly. Malty sweetness on the nose and a barleywine through and through. You should envy my tastebuds.

90 Minute Imperial IPA Estariel
IPA. Plain and simple. Balanced bitterness and quaffable. Refreshing on a hot summer day, despite the ABV. Thank you, Dogfish Head!

This was from 2017 and part of a special drop from DFH Alehouse.

Rye Barrel-Aged Palo Santo Marron Estariel
Take a beer created in Palo Santo wood tanks and lovingly pour it into rye barrels and wait. What you get is a deep, complex mahogany beauty with rye on the nose, lighter roast than an imperial stout and jut a delight to sip. Bravo, DFH!

Oloroso Sherry Barrel-Aged 120 Minute IPA Estariel
Oh my. This is everything I love about 120, but with a magical depth that the sherry barrels added. Unctuous and smooth, sweet, but rich and delicate, too. Best way to celebrate Friday, the 13th.

Utopias Barrel - Aged World Wide Stout (2021) Estariel
Really. It's WWS in Utopias barrels. Complex. Multilayered. Roasty, but not burnt. A bit fusel, but is mellowing nicely. The gift of two merged breweries allowing each other space, but the intersection is a delight.
Deep amber almost brown, but smoothe and deeply sweet, yet with a more almost maple richness. A delight.
As hazy beers go, this is delightful. Really enjoyed this! Quite a light colour and the haze is like a pale ale that wasn't clarified.

Where the Wild Hops Are Estariel
Glad I tried this. Very intriguing and the hops are not front and centre, but the bitterness is uppity and nice.

120 Minute IPA (2014) Estariel
Well, what a lovely excuse for a holiday. It's 120 Day and I have opened my next to last 2014 120. It is just what is needed. It is everything I love in a beer.

Oak-Aged Vanilla World Wide Stout Estariel
Ah, this has aged nicely! Dark mahogany with a hint of ruby when back-lit. Wafting hints of vanilla and oak on the nose. Rich chocolate and roasty front with a smidge of tannins in the middle and finish. 2017 was a year where I needed this lovely beer!

World Wide Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged Estariel
Happy New Year, everyone! May 2022 be a million times better than 2021! Cheers! Slainte!

This is... Interesting. A bit too complex for my tastes, but it is malty and sweet with a slightly sour undertone that does not taste off.
Not my choice, but my wife's, but it really was nice. It was everything as advertised with no surprises.
This, too, was one of my wife's picks and it was spot on. She chose it because one of the hop varieties used is Ariana. Really quite a quaffable NE pale.
Hazy lemon colour. Nice balance of malt and hops into a light, quenching brew. Its smoothness has a bit of tartness on the finish.
Not much lactose and the coffee dominates. Really better than I expected with the words turpentine coffee in the descriptor
over 3 years ago
This is a 2018 version and I am pleasantly surprised that it survived to be still quite drinkable. Still, hoppy and still that hint of sweetness.
Dark amber with a nice pale ivory head. Malt and caramel with hops lingering especially on the middle and finish. Quite quaffable.
Pours dark mahogany with nice dark tan head. Faint cinnamon on the nose, a bit of fruitiness. Chillies are mild and blend into the cocoa throughout. A bit thin on the mouthfeel, but this not an imperial, but everyday milk stout. Mild roast at the finish.

I Heard You Like USDA-074 Estariel
Interesting. The mouthfeel is a bit off for me. Almost a bit too silky. Lots of tropical notes, but none too prevalent.
Yay! A DFH barleywine! Malt on the nose and front. Whata lovely mouthfeel with a sweetness like drinking honey mead only less harsh and sublinely complex.

Utopias Barrel-Aged Palo Santo Marron Estariel
What is not to like about anything aged in Utopias barrels? I rest my case
about 4 years ago
Really delightful! Uncomplicated, but genuine to style. Would definitely add to my list!
Not a pilsner fan, but this is quite good. Leave it to Dogfish to make a believer out of me.
Dark malt on the nose with a chocolate hint. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but okay for a milk stout. Bitter and sweet with a waft of smoke on the finish.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) (2017) Estariel
Coffee and a bit of chocolate on the nose. Dark brown colour with a tan head that fades to a thin ring. Coffee is throughout, but the mouthfeel is thinner than I like. The alcohol is present, but not hot. This is fine, but not outstanding.
Hazy orange colour with a faint hoppy, citrus on the nose. There was even a bit of the bread/biscuit wafting up. Citrusy and juicy with a lingering fruity bitterness.
Hops wafted straight to my nose and the fragrance of oats also lifted upwards briefly. The lemon haze with a strong ivory head was appealing, too.. Citrus and grapefruit pleasantly punch the palate. Lingering hop bitterness is balanced.
This is the 2017 variant that was on tap at the Dogfish Head Alehouse recently. Still mellow and smooth without much fusel burn. Not as sweet and syrupy as some other barleywines and really just a joy to sip.
Hints of cacao and coconut on the nose with a dark, dark brown colour and deep tan head. Mildly roasty with a faint coffee, chocolate middle and finish. Easy sipping and very smooth. Very much a porter.
I actually like this better than when I first tasted it. Strong maltiness with a Belgian estery boldness. The ruby-mahogany is really a pleasant colour with a clarity that marries well.

I Remember My First Check-In - Tasting Room Estariel
Mush better than I expected considering it is a fruited sour. The lavender from Lavender Fields and the berries from Kings Berries really make a beautiful colored brew.
Very nice! Great balance on all the malt and spice profile. Too much ginger would have been a mistake, but this had the perfect amount to enhance all the other stout flavours. And the nitro added a silken smoothness.
